Mining and South Pacific Coast Railroad heiresses Theresa Fair Oelrichs and Virginia Fair Vanderbilt inherit land atop posh Nob Hill in San Francisco. They build a hotel there, naming it Fairmont – “Fair” in honor of their father, and “Mont” in reference to the hilltop location. On the eve of the grand opening – April 6, 1906 – the infamous great earthquake strikes the city, and the hotel is gutted by fire. The sisters rebuild and just one year later, Fairmont becomes the first major business in the city to reopen. In 2002, Fairmont San Francisco is added to the National Register of Historic Places.
